Sounds rich from the guy that speaks at conferences, but I've noticed a few things I get from attending that are hard to get anywhere else.

Motivation is hard to maintain, conferences help

I always get a surge of motivation seeing peers and colleagues talk passionately about their work and craft. Watching someone on stage genuinely excited about a problem they solved or an approach they took is such a cheat code for a boost when you need one. You leave wanting to go build something.

Step out of your bubble

For me, working at a massive organisation for many years, it was easy to not know what's happening anywhere else. You focus on your day-to-day, you try to be good at what you do, and you don't really get a chance to see what else is out there.

You start thinking the way your company does things is the way things are done. Your tools, your processes, your trade-offs become the default in your head. Conferences break that. You hear how other teams at other companies are solving similar problems differently, and that's always useful to know.

Meet cool people

This is the best part for me. You meet people who are also looking to meet people. They're open, willing to hear your story, and more than willing to share theirs.

Great conferences have solid codes of conduct that ensure the right people are usually there and good behaviour isn't just expected but enforced. It creates an environment where you can actually have real conversations with strangers.

A few valuable professional relationships for me have started with a random chat at a conference.

Sometimes you learn something

You might pick up one or two things you can immediately apply to your day-to-day. Technical, operational, somewhere in-between. You'll most likely walk away knowing something you didn't before.

Get a reality check on AI

Especially useful right now with all the change happening in our industry. You hear from your peers what they're actually doing and how their roles are changing.

The primary benefit for me is quieting the anxiety in your head telling you everyone is going at 1000 miles an hour on AI and changing everything. You go to a conference and hear what actually worked and what didn't, and you realise most people are figuring it out just like you are. That's tremendously more useful than the noise online.

Conclusion

If you can, or you can get your company to sponsor you, attend more conferences.
